The missing metric in organisational understanding.

Helping organisations identify the relational conditions influencing performance, risk and future value, before they become visible in traditional measures.

Commercial · Government · Community

The language of an emerging discipline for understanding how organisations really perform.

The core idea

The quality of an organisation's decisions can never exceed the quality of its understanding.

Most organisations are rich in performance data but poor in visibility of the relational conditions shaping future outcomes. Relational Performance exists to close that gap.

The work

One body of work. Four connected pathways.

Mark Barnes Coaching & Advisory is the gateway into a wider body of work. Follow the pathway that fits where you are.

"Traditional performance measures often miss the relational conditions shaping risk, trust, decision quality and future value."

About Mark

Twenty-five years observing how organisations really perform.

I have spent more than 25 years in rooms most people only ever see from one side: commercial negotiations, ministerial meetings, staff briefings, community gatherings and board tables.

Very few careers create genuine fluency across all of them. That range, more than any single title, is what I bring to the organisations I work with.

My career began on the floor of industrial supply in the Northern Territory and grew into senior commercial leadership supporting mining, oil and gas, construction, fuel, government and defence.

I later founded and built NT Supply Solutions from a regional start-up into a business generating more than $5 million in annual revenue.

Along the way, I stopped seeing operations, sales, stakeholder engagement and leadership as separate disciplines. I began to see the relational conditions underneath them: the trust, communication, alignment, decision quality and human dynamics that ultimately shape organisational outcomes.

"I don't read operations, sales and people as separate disciplines. I read the relational conditions underneath them, the layer that determines how performance moves."

Where the work connects

The commercial and the community sit closer than most people think.

Alongside the discipline, Mark builds and backs ventures that apply the same thinking at community scale, where relationships, participation and local economics compound into commercial infrastructure.

The Missing Metric

How Relational Intelligence Helps Leaders See What Traditional Measures Miss

Drawn from the book The Missing Metric and the emerging discipline of Relational Performance.

Every business tracks revenue, margin, conversion, turnover and customer outcomes. Far fewer track the relational conditions that may be shaping those results before they appear in traditional measures.

This keynote makes the case that Relational Intelligence is not a soft skill. It is an organisational capability that helps leaders, executives and boards identify recurring relational patterns, understand emerging risks and opportunities, and make better-informed commercial decisions.
